Objective: To assess the frequency of infection of portacath in children having malignant tumours and undergoing chemotherapy, and to assess the association of the infection with already known risk factors. Methods: The retrospective review was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and involved patient data related to the period between January 2005 to December 2010. A questionnaire was designed to collect the required data. A total of 67 children were included having portacath inserted for chemotherapy. Children in which portacath was inserted under local anaesthesia in Radiology department, reinserted or inserted because of a reason other than childhood malignancy were excluded. SPSS 19 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Of the total, 46 (67%) patients were males and a majority of the total (n = 31; 46%) was between 6-10 years of age. Besides, 42 (63%) patients had leukaemia, 7 (11%) had lymphoma and 18 (26%) had various solid tumours. Six (8.95%) ports were removed due to infection. There was significant difference between infection and non-infection groups with respect to absolute neutrophilic count levels (p \u3c 0.001). Positive association was found between low absoulute neutrophilic count level (\u3c or = 500) and the occurrence of port infection. Conclusions: Port infection rate is higher in children with low absoulute neutrophilic count. The issue needs to be addressed and one may have to alter the timings of port insertion. It is recommended to insert port when absolute neutrophilic count is normal. To further evaluate the subject, a multicentre trial must be conducted

    Genotype-Phenotype Heterogeneity in Haemophilia

    Get PDF
Haemophilia was previously regarded as a classical example of Mendelian inheritance, with mutation in only a single gene (F8 or F9) causing the disease phenotype. The disease manifests complete penetrance. Studies, however, revealed the striking genetic and phenotypic heterogeneities of the disease. With further sophistication of clinical and molecular techniques, the disease was also found to have allele heterogeneity, phenotypic plasticity and variation in expressivity. The variations are more pronounced in F9 variants with five distinct phenotypes. All these phenomena advocate a rather complex genotype-phenotype relationship for the disease. A keen insight into the matter may unveil new avenues of therapeutics

FINANCIAL LEVERAGE, WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT AND FIRM PROFITABILITY: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM PAKISTAN STOCK EXCHANGE

This study aims to investigate the working capital management practices and its effects on firms’ profitability with moderating role of leverage. The Generalized Method of Moments estimation technique under fixed effect specification is used to analyze the cross-industries sample of 210 nonfinancial firms listed on Pakistan Stock Exchange. The result showed that receivable collection period and payable payment period have positive significant impact on profitability of firms, on the other hand cash cycle has significant negative impact on profitability of firms, and where as the impact of payable payment period is found insignificant on profitability. In case of moderation of leverage with respect to relationship of working capital with profitability the results showed that leverage weakens this relationship significantly. The study suggests that managers in nonfinancial sector should take into consideration the moderating role of leverage with respect to working capital management

Chaotic Time Series Prediction using Spatio-Temporal RBF Neural Networks

Due to the dynamic nature, chaotic time series are difficult predict. In conventional signal processing approaches signals are treated either in time or in space domain only. Spatio-temporal analysis of signal provides more advantages over conventional uni-dimensional approaches by harnessing the information from both the temporal and spatial domains. Herein, we propose an spatio-temporal extension of RBF neural networks for the prediction of chaotic time series. The proposed algorithm utilizes the concept of time-space orthogonality and separately deals with the temporal dynamics and spatial non-linearity(complexity) of the chaotic series. The proposed RBF architecture is explored for the prediction of Mackey-Glass time series and results are compared with the standard RBF. The spatio-temporal RBF is shown to out perform the standard RBFNN by achieving significantly reduced estimation error.Comment: Published in: 2018 3rd International Conference on Emerging Trends in Engineering, Sciences and Technology (ICEEST). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1908.0132

CAPM based Quantification of Bankruptcy Risk: A Heuristic Approach

    Get PDF
This paper builds on Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and its ability to validate market and firm specific risk. The effort is aimed at ascertaining the role of bankruptcy risk in determining the cost of capital in firms and its impact on corporate valuation. We also attempt to replace and analyze disparity of systematic and unsystematic components of risk with bankruptcy and risk of future liquidity. A similar study has recently been carried out in Indian market by Shirur (2013) for checking the validity of beta and cumulative risk measurement for identifying the presence of bankruptcy risk. This research may be the first attempt at analyzing such semantics with data from Pakistan. Therefore, the current study attempts to investigate the role of bankruptcy risk in determining the cost of capital in corporate valuation and the need of segregating systematic risk and unsystematic risk into liquidity risk and bankruptcy risk. The findings of this study suggest that unsystematic risk shall be eluded while investing in a well-diversified portfolio, but after investing in a specific firm, the unsystematic risk needs to be incorporated in total corporate valuation

Several factors force employees to leave the organization. This study examines the relationship among job turnover intention, workload, low pay and job stress in private schools at district swat. For this purpose, the data has been collected from of two hundred and forty eight employees. The results of the study indicated that workload, low pay and job stress are significantly positive related to turnover intention. This study also suggested that for overcoming the turnover from the schools enough salary should be given to employees to motivate them and retained
